Starting Over

“This is going to be a new day….”

Or so she said.  But is it ever new?  The great downfall of every great tomorrow…is memory.  The baggage that we lug at our heels…slowing our forward advance.

Memory was her downfall.  His was anger. Malice, resentment.  Seething from every pore of his being…boiling over like a cauldron of hot violence…spilling all over her face.

Most of the scars were mental.  Scratches would heal.  Bruises eventually faded away…but memories…memories remain…piling one upon the other.

We often think ourselves weak, but the weight which we carry every day shows us powerful beyond all imagination.  Her memory drags her down.

“I promise it won’t happen again baby. I’ll promise I’ll be different…This is going to be a new day…”

Or so he said.  But is it ever new?  The great downfall of every great tomorrow..is memory.  The baggage we lug at our heels…slowing our forward advance.

Memory was his downfall.  Hers was being too mouthy.  Malice, resentment.  She was so pathetic…oozing out every pore of her being…and then she opened her mouth.  One too many times, and her ignorance boiled over like a cauldron.

“Why does she make me act like that?”

The memories would come flooding back…every time her insolence shown.  They would pile up until the beast overtook him.  Hungry for retribution.  His memory drags him down.

“I hope this is going to be a new day…”

So they said.  But is it ever new?  The great downfall of every great tomorrow…is memory.  The baggage that we lug at our heels…slowing our forward advance.

Memory was their downfall.  It was all they knew.

“Maybe it’s like this in every house.”

It’s already started.  Seething from every pore of their being…boiling over like a cauldron of hot violence…spilling all over…though only adolescent in age, they are perfect models of a perfect household…holding a perfect silence, of perfect memories of violence.

We often think ourselves weak, but the weight which we carry every day shows us powerful beyond all imagination.  But their memories drags them down.

“This is going to be a new day…”

But they all lied.  From the anger in his eyes, to the burning in her side…to the inward twisted cries, to the subterfuge and lies.   The great downfall of every great tomorrow…is memory.  The baggage that we lug at our heels…slowing our forward advance.  It drags us down.

  1. This is such a powerful post. It reminds me of my relationship that I had to run from because the baggage, the memories were all that kept us from moving forward. I enjoyed this very much! Thank you for writing this.
